PROJECT 1 – MONDULI SCHOOL DISTRICT, ARUSHA, TANZANIA

Working together with a local school district in Tanzania, NGI is collaborating directly with another local non-profit to assist in large scale teacher training and bringing new curricula to the school.

PHASE 1 (COMPLETED)

  • Working together with the Monduli School District in Arusha, Tanzania, we executed and completed a successful pilot of our teacher training course with our first cohort of teachers in July of 2022. Many months before going to Tanzania, we worked with our local partner, Nurture the Next Generation, to evaluate 10 schools. Based on this information, we tailored our strategies to fit the needs of teachers within the Monduli School District;

  • Our three educators, Mary Lutkewitte (co-founder and Vice President of NGI and Educational Expert), William Sprankles (NGI Board Member and Educational Expert), and Katie Klei (NGI Board Advisor and Educational Expert) delivered live, hands-on training to 34 teachers;

  • The three Educators were also able to visit 3 schools to personally connect with the students and village elders, and provide real-time teacher feedback as the teachers implemented the new strategies. The trainers were also able to assess see the availability of resources in the targeted schools; and,

  • Develop a meaningful and deep connection with the Monduli District Administrators with a request to come back and reach even more teachers and schools in 2023.

PHASE 2 (COMPLETED)

  • Phase 2 continued our work with the Monduli School District. Our educators Mary Lutkewitte and William Sprankles returned to Arusha in July 2023, along with new education specialist Mark McMillen. They followed up with the inaugural cohort of teachers to assess how well the techniques have positively impacted their delivery of educational content;

  • Identified teachers from the inaugural cohort to take additional training and become leaders in creating a sustainable local network to support the continued optimization of the learnings;

  • Brought additional schools into the program, creating the next cohort of teachers;

  • Continued our relationship with the District Administration as a key element in the sustainable local network.

PHASE 3 (COMPLETED)

  • In 2023 and 2024, NGI focused on assessing the existing cohorts of trained teachers in the Monduli School District through real-time, on-the-ground evaluation. This was conducted in partnership with our local collaborators, Olais Wilson and Archbold Mushi, along with various representatives from the Monduli School District.

  • Olais, Archbold, and the District Representatives visited seven schools during the 2023/2024 school year and 16 schools during the 2024/2025 school year.

  • They observed teachers in action, provided real-time feedback and evaluations on concept implementation, and recorded videos for our educational experts to assess which techniques are effective and which may require further refinement.

  • The participation of District Representatives served as a critical demonstration of administrative support and reinforced to teachers the importance of implementing the training techniques; and

  • The information, feedback, and analysis provided guided the next phase of the NGI educators’ strategy.

PHASE 4 (ACTIVE)

  • Phase 4 will bring our educators back to Tanzania to continue working with the Monduli School District in 2025. The focus will be on formally engaging with School District leaders to evaluate the program, identify priority areas for resource allocation, and explore expanding the program by onboarding additional schools and teachers while developing the teacher-turned-trainer concept.

  • Our educators will conduct another training session for new teachers, as well as an advanced session for prospective teacher-turned-trainers; and

  • Our educators will discuss with our on-the-ground partners and the Monduli School District administrators the possibility of expanding this model to additional school districts within Tanzania.
